The Protectorate was a highly automated and technologically advanced interstellar empire that controlled the star system where Euphrosyne resides.
The empire had roots tracing back to European nations on Earth. It operated as a restricted-democratic constitutional monarchy. Its capital was located on the planet Agnes, and strictly only the citizens of Agnes were permitted to vote in elections. Before the Great War, the head of state was the constitutional monarch, Queen Karolina.
The Protectorate utilized a fully electronic currency known as Credits. Because the empire was so technologically advanced, manual human labor was uncommon within its borders.
The official flag of the Protectorate empire was blue, featuring a golden crown in the center with 8 golden rays radiating out from it.

Despite owning Euphrosyne, the Protectorate government had a very minimal military presence on the planet during the Vanguard invasion. An estimated 95% of the planet’s robotic defenders actually belonged directly to the Hephaestus Mining Corporation (HMC), a private corporate entity.
modern era (2603)
Today, the vast majority of humans living on Euphrosyne are descendants of Protectorate citizens who were stranded after the bombing. The notable exceptions to this are the Mechanics (who descend from Vanguard forces), the Starborn, and certain groups of Nomads.
The current status of the broader Protectorate empire is entirely unknown to the inhabitants of Euphrosyne. The empire has made no successful attempt to communicate with the planet or reestablish its presence since the isolation of Euphrosyne.
